| Silenced, Outrage and Tears as Debacle at Shea Slowly Sinks In" Some cried at the end. Some laid blame. Some looked stunned and wretched. And the voices of Mets fans who had roared all summer for their nobones champions were silent or subdued or outraged, with all bragging rights lost and grand dreams vanished on the last day of the season... The No. 7 train from Shea ran a bit slower into Manhattan, at least for the downtrodden in orange and blue. Little boys in Mets caps held the hands of their fathers who had been crying. Couples rode silently, pensive and commiserating with head shakes and whispers..." - Robert D. McFadden, The New York Times In Bitter End to Epic Skid, Mets are Out" In a clubhouse filled with boxes that await winter storage, Randolph spoke to his players for about five minutes, his eyes welling with tears as he talked about countless missed opportunities... There will be a new slogan for that team. It will be painted atop the Mets' dugout over the one that has tortured them all season: Your Season Has Come. The Mets' season, indeed, has come. And gone..." - Ben Shpigel, The New York Times After a Crushing Defeat, Realizing What Was Lost" The search for words as he addressed his team was emotional. Randolph was no longer able to push or prod his players, so he told them that they had allowed a terrific chance to vanish. He told the players to remember how they felt at that precise moment, to remember how much losing this opportunity hurt. Then Randolph cried..." - Jack Curry, The New York Times Coming up unlucky 7's everywhere" This wasn't what the Mets were supposed to be on the last day of the season. This wasn't supposed to be the end of baseball at Shea. There was at least supposed to be another game in Philadelphia, one more chance to win the National League East..." - Mike Lupica, The Daily News Losers Gave Us Outs, Not Doubts" They didn't blow a three-run lead, something they'd done four different times in the season's final two weeks. Nobody struck out in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, the ice-pick-in-the-eye moment that ended last year's dream ride of a season. There was none of that. Instead, there was a parade of Florida Marlins galloping across home plate in the first inning; seven of them in all, all of them drawing the shades down a little further on the season as they rounded third and headed home..." - Mike Vaccaro, The New York Post " We are a team. And we fucked this up as a team." - Pedro Martinez " I still think we have the best collection of players in the league. But we were horrible down the stretch. We did this to ourselves." - David Wright " I'm still a Mets fan - of course I am. I'm a diehard, diehard fan." - Matt Dillon " We were too good to finish like this." - Carlos Delgado Well it was a sad end to a great season... you win some... you lose some... unfortunately the Mets couldn't produce the runs we needed and our pitching didn't come through and the last month of this season has just been a slow heartbreak... but they'll come back strong next season... Jose will come back out of his slump... Wright will come back to continue his hitting streak... hopefully LoDuca, Green, Alou, Castillo will be back with us... and despite what most of you may think, I hope Randolph is back with us as well... I don't know if Glavine is retiring or not but if he isn't... where ever he's pitching whether it be on the Mets or another team, I hope his career will end on a high note... Delgado is gonna heal and come back better than ever... everybody's gonna come back with another year's experience under their belt... maybe not post-season experience but this year I guess just wasn't the year for it... last year we were one game away from a chance at the World Series... and this year we just fell a little short... but next year is when we'll take it. You gotta believe and keep believing... I 'm not gonna say it wasn't disappointing to be sitting there, watching the post-season slip away... I'm not gonna say it didn't hurt to hear everybody booing the Mets... I'm not gonna say it wasn't one of the worst games I've seen the Mets play... and I won't say that I didn't expect more... but that's why we're fans right? We take them as they are... whether they're the best or second best... in this case they came in second... but they're still the team we've been rooting for all season... and they're still the same team that made us smile after every win... the same team that represents us every time they're on the field... and the same team that gave us something to cheer about... METS 2008... until then... As for now... I'll be rooting for the Yankees... Hope you kick Phillies ass if/when you play them... and I hope Rollins gets injured (that's mean but there is some bitterness) AND FFFFFFFF the stupid Marlins... and the stupid comment Ramirez made... dumb-ass last place team... don't be mad cause you got hit... stop being a bitch I HATE YOUR STUPIDDD TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! okay... sorry... a bit o' frustration... Just one bit of good news... Markus and I got Oliver Perez's autograph~ he's such a sweetheart... he's always the one Met that will take out most time to sign everything for fans... smiles before the game... | | |
